I really hope Caprica doesn't end up being a "Dynasty in space" and actually is a sci-fi rather than a "family drama". I could see me going off it fairly fast if it isn't.

If they're not careful, they'll lose all the BSG fans that like it for the action/space battle/CGI-warfare etc. and not pick up the non-BSG crowd because it will still be tagged as BSG-esque. Result: naff-all viewers.

This quote from the Reg article is, I suspect, the one most likely to have viewers leaving in droves: "We want people to come to this who have never heard of Battlestar Galactica," Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi channel, told Variety. "I think, because (Galactica's) backdrop was space and spaceships, there was a barrier to entry for some viewers. Caprica has none of that."

We shall see....
