Cats

Haiku
Watch them prowl the bed
If someone doesn't feed them
My toe count will drop

Middle of the night observation
When staggering to/from the toilet in the dark anything with a white splotch on it looks like a cat, including things hanging from doorknobs, bits of fluff on the carpet and actual cats. It's very disconcerting.

Look on the bright side. At least there's a white splotch to go by.

Black cats, dark non reflective collars = falling over shadows constantly.

The trick, it seems, is to move your feet slowly, with toes upcurled and no more than a centimetre from the floor. If you encounter something furry: stop. If you encounter something solid - you don't hurt your toes.

Try going downstairs in the dark and encountering a unexpectedly 'furry' step.
