New Scientific Research!

'[Lesbianism] is well known to have a debasing effect on those practising it, which is mental, moral and physical in character,' he said. 'It leads to gross mental illness, nervous instability, and in some cases to suicide in addicts to this vice. It is a vice which, if widespread, becomes a danger to the well-being of a nation ...'

Well, not 'new' as such. This was the report given by the medical advisor to the government, which led to the banning of The Well of Loneliness in 1928.

It's amazing what the government release of files turns up...

'It leads to gross mental illness, nervous instability, and in some cases to suicide...'

*rolls eyes*

Reminds of the fact that until recently (I'm pretty certain the clause has now been repealed), lesbianism was still recorded as a mental disorder, allowing families of the 'affected' to have them sectioned and treated... I used to have a copy of the relevant legislation around here somewhere...
