It's probably because the Gene Wilder version is burned deeply into my childhoood memories, to the extent that his Wonka holds more sway over my imagination than Roald Dahl's, but it didn't inspire... Still, give it a whirl, it is Tim.
It's Spielberg, so expect the schmaltzy ending. I'd still like to see a version of War of the Worlds that was set in period. Kind of a Merchant Ivory War of the Worlds.
