According to this the average IQ of a state corresponds fairly well with which way the state voted in the 2000 elections.

Two things spring instantly to mind:
1) Where do the IQ figures come from?
2) If the IQ figures are correct - Mississipi has an _average_ IQ of 85?!?!?!?!?

I'm somewhat disbelieving at this point...

Yeah, but you've never been to Mississippi....

*grin*

Nod. I'm a transplant, but I think my friends here got 90% of the native IQ points in MS, which means everyone else is more stupid than you think.

I'm reminded of an old econometrics lecturer describing the importance of remembering that correlation does not imply causality. An interesting correlation at any rate.

That said, I quite believe the average IQ figures. Although I'll admit, when watching American* politics, I do often wonder more about the IQ of the politcians ;)

* and sadly occasionally British politics too

... this site says that the figures were attributed to a particular book, but that the author of that book confirms that no such figures for IQ by State occur in the book.

I emailed Snopes.com the day that came out to see if they could dissect it. Stay tuned.

Hmmm - someone should color in a map of the US based on those IQ figures to see if any geographic pattern shows up...

it says...
Error Correction: The source of this data is not "Wealth of Nations" as it had been attributed to us. A reader writes in and tells us he has the book (Sorry to hear that Mike) and the state IQ's aren't in it. This is a huge relief as the book is one of those race/IQ books. So we're still trying to track down the source for the IQ scores. As this is all a bit of good fun we aren't to concerned with the source. We know that Republicans are mentally impaired. If they weren't, that would just make them greedy.

Just in case anyone missed it, this page is for amusement only.

The bias should have been pretty clear up front when looking at at which candidate it awarded Florida to. :)
