Having spent an hour at an introductory DDR session at the convention (and doing very badly in places) I was interested to see this piece on its history.

If it wasn't so expensive I'd be tempted to pick one up.

Well, I'd recommend to someone starting out, who doesn't already have a PS2, to get a PSOne, a mat, and a game. PSOnes go for about £20 on Ebay, and you should be able to get Dancing Stage Fever (the one I played on Sunday, but the PS version rather than the PS2 version) and a mat for about another £20. You may also need some non-slip backing to put on the back of the soft mat. Total cost under £50. (I shelled out £90 for a similar setup when I started, but still reckoned it was only as much as a couple of months of gym membership). Most of the videogame shops have a starter set for dancing games for around £50. (DanceUK uses different mats from DDR, irritatingly).

The games available for the PC have drawbacks (notably that the only ones that are like DDR/dancing stage are open source, and you have to go trawling round the net for steps and the matching mp3 files).
