Hmm. I wasn't sure how to respond, because I'm not quite sure what qualifies as "goth music" these days. I liked The Cure, The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees, et. al. back in the '80s, but I assume today's goth folk are listening to different stuff.
I guess I've answered my own question. I should have just clicked on "not a goth at all".
I clicked "not a goth, but I wear black a lot." I could've clicked "but I like the music" too, but like the previous commenter, I mostly like the stuff from the 80s. Some of the current stuff is good, but some of it.... Meh.
I also have a problem with certain folks amongst the "scene" who seemingly can't handle a person with eclectic musical tastes. Yeah, I still love Madonna & Rick Springfield. I also love Dvorak & Tchaikovsky. Queensryche & Dream Theater are amazing. And so on, ad infinitum. Me? I like music. *nods*
goth means too many different things and there is a difference between having goth traits and identifying as one. i no longer identify as a goth, though i strongly did 16-18. however i still wear and excessive amount of black and like a lot of goth music. tisme, who i would class as more of a goth than me, thinks i wear too much black.
i also listen to blues, jazz, funk, hip-hop, classical, soul, motown and have a tendency to wear non goth clothes too.
Well, technically I'm an ex-goth and on the odd occasion I go to a goth club I look suspiciously like one. I am however, most definitely no-longer a goth.
I rarely wear black but I do tend to wear the silks and velvets that are frequently associated with goths. I'm not that much into the swirly goth music but I like it wear it overlaps with the techno-industrial..
Where's the "I'm a real Goth as I sacked Rome/ Built and designed European cathedrals/ am a Barbarian with a distinct lack of culture" option? Yeah, i wear black. I like the music. But I can prove I am not a Goth- I have actually gone into a shop and proudly BOUGHT albums by bands/individuals such as Hawkwind, The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Simon The Cyclist (so okay, that was ordered free off the Net but I still love it), Fleetwood Mac (EARLY STUFF! BLUES STUFF!)and I admit to loving Weird Al's stuff. Now are The Damned Goth or Punk? There's a question for you! POst yer rants to me on me log. It beats my infrequent rants...
