Tech Glee!

My handwriting being what might be best described as bloody awful, I'd taken to firstly writing notes during my gaming sessions on my Palm and then to typing them with the keyboard accessory. Having done so, I'd slide it across to Hugh to read when he had a moment.

Today Hugh got a Palm for his birthday. 5 minutes ago we got bluetooth working, so now I can write notes on my palm, send them across the ether and have him read them, without anyone knowing when I've passed them across.....

That's really rather excellent. =)

That's pretty cool, but isn't half the fun of roleplaying passing screwed up bits of paper across the table to other players, and arrousing the suspicions of everyone else at the table?

Actually while I remember, I'm planning to get a PDA for work. I don't want a laptop as I can't be bothered carrying something that size around.

Basically I want it for making a few notes, composing Emails etc. when I'm out of the office. I also want to synchronise it with my desktop PC, so I can take my important files and most importantly, my calendar and diary (currently stored in Outlook) with me.

Any suggestions or thoughts on any particular models. Are there any particular features that you've found important or extremely useful?

Well I don't want to get into the old 'my format is better than your format' thing (see also Spectrum/BBC/C64 or Amiga/ST, also any consoles released at similar times) but I've got an iPAQ and they might be better for newbies as they run a Windows-esque OS. Probably nice and easy to relate to, unless of course you're a Linux-kid (in which case you want a Sharp Zaurus).

Sod having Word/Excel viewers - I've got Word and Excel in full (well slightly cut down versions, but certainly servicable!).

That said, I had a Palm a few years ago and the handwriting recognition (Graffiti?) was fucking magic.

Surely that takes all the fun James Bond-ness out of finding ingenious ways to pass notes/pass on messages without other people knowing..?

Writing on the napkin under the glass that the GMs mint julep is in?

notes written on the inside of resealed sweet wrappers.. barging into the bathroom ahead of someone to steam up the mirror and write on it..

pfah, you're living in a hollow, empty world.
