On CCS, I have been told in the past by environmentalists that CCS was one of those "always in 5 years" goals - but it never got closer. It also costs a lot (£22bn, apparently!).

[Edit: I've just seen your sixth link. So yeah, OFFS is about right. Frankly, I reckon this will be £22bn wasted. Given that this is the same as the "black hole" left by the Tories, this feels like an own goal!]

Wow, that Omelas story really packs a punch. It's easy to think of the original Omelas story as commentary to a situation that doesn't exist anymore, as something that does not concern us, personally. We're getting dragged back to it by this story.
