"Soaring in thermals is clearly much more fun when you employ a vulture to help you out"

This might be the best sentence in the history of sentences.

I once had a colleague who was a keen paracender. He once told me about using a thermal in the Cotswolds where he could smell the cigarette smoke from the farmer driving his tractor in the field below.

It was quite a magical description.

You see, it stops working as soon as one understands that thermal is a piece of kit rather than an outfit.

The thought of sharing my thermals (rather than a thermal) with a vulture is uncomfortable bordering on terrifying.

It’s the surrealism I liked.

It's alright for you, you're not the one with a vulture in your thermals. It's Andrew and me who are suffering and he was already pretty uncomfortable with the whole business before the vulture got involved.

I was in a thermal (in a pre-WW2-era glider) with a wedge-tailed eagle once. Simply magical (although not as magical as the clip). It quickly rose to my level, scoffed at me, and then showed me how it was really done as it zoomed off to altitude.

I was also in a thermal with a pelican once. I left. Pelicans definitely don't like to share in my experience.

Pelicans have the look of an animal that would eat you if they could and which are prepared to give it a go to find out if they can or not.

'The history of the Entire World, I guess' was awesome!

Oh wow - it sat on his harness! I thought: He shouldn't be stroking that wild bird. Then I thought: That bird shouldn't be nibbling his shoes.
