It reminded me of something that happened to my sister. She was lounging and sunbathing on a beach one time and a group were playing fairly random volleyball. They invited her to join in. As I recall, one of them thought it would be funny to get her to serve.

Thump, serve wins point. Thump, serve wins point.

Then she mentioned that she had been on the national junior team (or something like that).

1. I read a book on the history of the Holy Sepulchre a few years back (sadly the book is somewhere I can't trivially check the title) and the disputes between the various Christian sects that mean that the bloody thing is about 1mm away from falling down in a heap. An immovable ladder is just the visible sign of the incredibly petty disputes...

1. And in an extremely non-metaphorical sense, evidence of high quality ladder making in 18th C Jerusalem! For a wooden ladder to have survived that long in the open air is impressive!

(2) Is one of the downsides of charitable work being an activity for those who are rich in time, and the executive work being the preserve of the successful and affluent: it degenerates into top-down direction by managerialists with dictatorial hostility to worker involvement, and a mediocre accountant's evaluation of the work that the charity tries to do.
