6. Yeah lasik gives me the heebie jeebies too. The main reason I'm having surgery on my left eye is because it was already blind so there's relatively little chance of making it worse. They aren't touching my workhorse right eye.

Yeah, if I had an eye that wasn't doing a great job and needed something to improve it, then I'd be tempted.

6. Interesting. I'm considering not laser surgery but multifocal lens replacement for my horrible age related sight problems. There can be issues there, but it's often done for cataracts (which will happen to us all eventually) and in case of problems, though it's not ideal, can have changed for single vision lenses. Since my own lenses are almost seized already, I am probably willing to try it. But first I'm trying multifocal contacts. My trouble is that with my hobbies being outdoors in rain wind spray dust etc, contactlenses might not be so practical - but moreso than even the complex multifocal glasses that I barely use (sharp areas to small for my reading style). I mainly want my distance vision back (my focus is beyond infinity), if I still need reading glasses that's no biggie. But it's getting awkward to drive or sail:-(

I'm also motivated by the fact that my mother's AMD now means she can't drive or read or use a phone. At 75. If that happens to me (I'm at 3-4 X more risk because my mother has it), I would rather have had at least a couple more decades of improved sight. Plus the lenses have UV filter built in, which helps a bit against AMD.

If your eyes aren't doing their job then surgery to improve that seems a reasonable risk. And it doesn't sound like it should make things worse.

My mother has AMD, but the medication they have her on has halted it. Would you like me to find out what it is?

I am trying multifocal contact lenses as a simulation, just got them today. I can sort of read, distance is tricky. The thing is that I'm used to using the left for far and right for near and these swap it. I'll try for the 2-3 weeks and see if my brain can work it out. Right now I would not at all be happy with this as permanent - my distance vision is dreadful and computer use is not great at all. But it took a week or so to get used to multifocal glasses so maybe.

My mother had all the treatments, injections in the eye. But they did not halt it, it went wet in both eyes and there was nothing more to do. :-(.

I'm on the recommended vitamin supplements already. And I don't have high blood pressure, or cholesterol issues(afaik) so I'm not taking the statins either. I also wear sunglasses (which my mother never did, having brown eyes). All the things that make it worse. I show no signs-but at age you don't, apparently.

6. I had lasik surgery and people who think this is a routine harmless procedure know nothing about it (and about surgeries in general). You can become blind, even lose your eyeballs and one very common side effect is dry eyes or light auras, which can be unbearable to some. I was asked to carefully think about it for at least a week before I could consent to it. I don't regret doing it but I understand perfectly why one wouldn't do it as it isn't some life-saving surgery.

Yeah. I thought about it and decided that I was too risk averse. Get the odds down to a million to one and I'd be up for it. Probably.

I feel the same way about all surgery. I think it should only be done when medically necessary, and if there are different surgery options the least invasive surgery should be done. I guess it's good I'm not a socialite or politician or hollywood celebrity because for them surgery seems necessary, not medically but socially. As for doing things to my eyes, I don't even want to deal with contact lenses. I'll probably end up having to get rid of the cataracts someday though.
