I was furious that the big unions (including mine, the GMB, which never balloted us on the issue) blocked PR at the last Labour conference but it seems most of them have changed their minds now.

I think some people have been working very hard behind the scenes on the unions. It's possible they mostly wanted to wait until their own votes had gone through.
