I'm curious as to how the priest managed to use "we" instead of "I". It seems such an unlikely mistake to make. I mean, presumably you practise these things at priest seminary. There are so many more Catholic rituals with more complicated words. Maybe because it was so simple he thought he didn't need to check.

I've been noticing Russian 'flu getting name checks here and there in the science (indeed, the 'grippe' being suffered from by Sherlock Holmes is Russian 'flu) but there's little real evidence of any solid connection.

Still intriguing to see this almost forgotten 'flu pandemic being remembered though.

I suppose that Jesus must have baptised Himself then.

I can't help thinking that if after two decades no one had noticed you'd been using the wrong words, it probably didn't matter a great!

To be honest I doubt our imaginary friends mind very much! I mean, it didn't seem too concerned at the time that a Jewish ritual bath was taken up by a minor Jewish sect... ;)

Still, it gives me an excuse to share one of the greatest anti-religion songs!

Whether "the priest did the right, but screwed it up (or was themselves not a valid priest)" counts as "okay, that counts" or "study, bad luck" is a traditional point of theological disagreement, I think :)
