Bit of a non-headline. The new electric trains have been running on that line for about a year. I've been on them. I've checked they're the model I'm thinking of and they are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_385 (also, why would they introduce new trains last year and now this year?). What is maybe the case is that they're now running in 8-car operation.

Which ones were the stopgap trains? Wikipedia says the Class 385 were introduced in July 2018, which matches up with my vague recollection.

That rings a bell...

The electric ones have definitely been around for a while. I took one to Glasgow in February and possibly one time before that too. They're very nice inside, the fact they're electric makes a noticeable difference to their acceleration (as you leave the station, you start going fast REALLY quickly!), but I find the funny front with the connector looks ugly, and another downside is that the front of the train doesn't display its destination and calling points like the older ones did.
