Detective Pikachu film review: This is how you adapt a video game for theaters
My philosophy for game adaptions has always been, take one aspect of the game that resonates with people, and build a story out of that, and don't worry about matching the original too closely. That seems to work well, but hasn't been done often enough.
For that matter, looking at the sonic trailer, a lot of the things shown seemed rather weird looking, but the basic concept of "here's sonic, going whooooooooosh along the road" was really cool. I think the "video game adaption curse" is party real, because it's easy to try to follow the game and not really have a vision for the film, but there's also films which have just been unlucky: Tomb Raider, or the fighting game adaptions, were perfectly well places to be fun, they just turned out average rather than good.
