Is it idiomatic in the UK to write "told" rather than "asked" for that context?

This reads like an anecdotal hagiography for Andropov, who should be viewed as critically as Brezhnev. Newly declassified documents that show a KGB person in good light are suspect with Putin in power today.

I think it's the newspaper writing it in what they see as more dynamic language. Because you're right, it looked like a request to me.

It's not an order she's bound to obey, but it looks like it was delivered more as an imperative than an invitation.

I really, really want sensible/europhile MPs to make themselves felt, but at some point, someone needs to introduce positive legislation, not just vote things down. I can't remember if it's possible for that to happen if the government aren't supporting it. I guess whatever happens its bad for May, but I don't care about that as much as wanting it to be less bad for everyone else.

If you're going to live to be 137 then I think the pressure should be off Sophia to produce grandchildren by the age of fourteen.

It occurs to me that one of the mechanisms by which robots will displace humans doing work is where the use of robots gives that firm a competative advanged (probably cost, perhaps performance) and forces their rivals out of business.

Particularly potent where robots can increase the capacity of an existing operation.

If it weren't a touchstone of my political analysis that the Tories always hang together to avoid being hanged separately I'd say the Tories were at risk of splitting.
