If the article on Battery Electric Buses is right (and there's no reason I can see to think otherwise) then the Chinese are actually going after batteries rather than buses.

Which is good, because cheaper battery tech and cheaper buses is more useful (to me) than just cheaper buses.

It's weird that the first image in the Fine Article referenced showed trolley-buses powered by overhead wires and pantographs rather than the focus of the article, battery-powered buses. It might have been a case of grabbing the first stock image off a Google search but does not fill me with confidence about the rest of the article.

There's also the usual optimism about battery pricing, that it's falling so it must inevitably fall in the future and at similar rates compared to the past few years. Right now demand for lithium carbonate, the basic feedstock of Li-tech batteries is pushing up the minehead price of the material. It's currently about double the price compared to 12 months ago. That price increase is in itself driving new production to come on stream but not for a while and if the price falls too far some of that more expensive and marginal production will be shut down until the price rebounds again.

It's still good news generally but lower-cost conventionally-powered internal-combustion buses fuelled by diesel or CNG are likely to remain the regular choice for bus operators, especially those which run long-distance services between termini.

"Mary, Queen of Scots" film is, as you'd expect, fiction

Hee! Nice summary of the article.
