My mum says that many of her country relatives used the word eggen for eggs.

Caxton tells the story of a sea merchant from Yorkshire gone ashore in Kent asking for eggs, and the housewife saying sorry, she doesn't speak French. Eventually someone works out he wants eyren.

"Loo, what sholde a man in thyse dayes now wryte, egges or eyren? Certaynly it is hard to playse every man, bycause of dyversite and chaunge of langage."
