The Second one might explain why so much poetry about Orkney comes out when I settle down to write! I know I have no family connections to the place at all (I do to the West Midlands where we now live) but something there goes very deep indeed.

As Ian Anderson once put it:

'Everyone is from somewhere
Even though you've never been there'

Shame there's no mention of gender as a factor there.

Because the first thing that goes through my mind when I see someone doing something against the greater good, like littering for example, is whether they're male and whether they look like they'll respond aggressively if I call them out. And I'm sure I'm not the only woman for whom that is true.

Fernweh: I spent a lot of time in childhood closely examining maps, and not necessarily of very exotic locales, imagining what they were like. Some of those less exotic locales I eventually got to.

Good article on hate crime. Some people seem shocked by the idea that state of mind can influence a criminal charge, but this article does well to point out that, for instance, killing someone can be treated as anything from first-degree murder to no charge at all, and the difference depends entirely on the killer's intent.

"Only three months until the days get shorter!" I'm reminded again of Dunsany's story about the clubman who claimed exotically to have visited the other side of the sun. Nobody believed him until he said it was six months ago.
