The UK does spend a lot on childcare, but I think that high figure may be ignoring child tax credits, which can cover up to 70% of the cost (maximum £210 per week) because those are paid to the family and then used to pay for childcare, rather than it being covered at source as it is in many other countries.

Not a mistake so much as a technicality - as they're paid to the family they could conceivably count as income. Admittedly, even with the child tax credits, the amount we were spending on childcare last year came close to 50% of our combined income (affordable thanks to help from grandparents, a lot easier now that Robin is at school), so it might be included even with the high figure.
