Someone made the point to me that Atlas Shrugged might be worthwhile reading for people who *should* be more selfish. Women in marriages whose husbands expect partnership to mean that they do one thing and their partner does everything else and anticipates all of their needs. People with abusive parents who were raised to never try to excel. But unsurprisingly, it became popular instead with people who were already quite self-entitled, like rich people who run major countries :(

Seconded. Such people need something other than that book, or any other by that author.

Now I want to consider an close-alternative universe in which John Galt was Ntozake Mbele, a disabled Black Woman-- and how the work was received there.

Untangling the Controversial Legacy of Sigmund Freud

[personal profile] jack 2017-09-17 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to say, it was possible Freud popularised the *idea* of understanding the brain, of forming hypotheses and confirming them with evidence, even though almost all of his specific ideas were wrong.

But then someone on tumblr had an impassioned rant about how many of Freud's specifics were inevitably diagnosing comparatively vulnerable people (ie. people who needed psychiatric help, but often imposed on them) with basically "it's all your fault" which was helpful to their more powerful relatives who were often paying for it. And he was an outsider so he may not have had much choice if he was to practice at all, but that was not good. I can't vouch for the details but they sounded to mostly know what they were talking about.

The Week My Husband Left And My House Was Burgled I Secured A Grant To Begin The Project That Became

That is an amazing story. Although I recently learned that Joe DiMaggio used to beat up Marilyn Monroe, which made me less confident of "who wouldn't trust..." :( Previously the only thing I knew about him was that if you were a dog and someone asked you who was the greatest baseball player of all time, you should say DiMaggio, not Ruth.

It was similar to this: https://unijokes.com/joke-269/

But I don't remember where I heard it *first* :)

I (can't log in with OpenID any more and) wondered why the dog was called Aussie when she dropped the kid off at school, and Ernie when she picked her up again.

A list of the most rewatched episodes of Star Trek (or, as I gather this is, the most rewatched episodes by those who had already watched all the other episodes of every series) is a very interesting thing, and I'm glad to see it, but it's not quite the same thing as a list of the most popular episodes.

That story about the cascade of mostly-wretched happenstances leading to the funding of the breast cancer research is amazing.

Also, paradigmatic of the burdens women academics bear-- though she was happily fortunate in some male colleagues.

The sequel is really good though! You should read that.
