The bit that baffles me on this stuff about who gets to use the loo is that if they don't know and the person needing to use it is not saying, how do they suppose they'll know?

There are separate cubicles and we're not usually labelled!

Perhaps the extremists believe we're all 6'7" and hairy?

Then again, perhaps they feel it their right to challenge every tall, homely or non 'feminine' non obviously binary ciswoman? That could get interesting.......

Yes, but urinals are gross. If you use one in shorts (or in trunks at the swimming pool), you realize just how much urine splashes back from them.

Also, peeing in front of strangers is just uncivilized.

That would be because loads of men don't wash their hands...

And in mixed bathrooms, already the seats are left up, surfaces are spattered (masculinity apparently requiring standing), the floor in front of the toilet smelly and unpleasant with Residues, etc. The state of the door handles is not to be imagined. No thanks!

My partner is currently transitioning from male to female, and presents as female on weekends (just not at work yet). Apparently male public washrooms in Toronto have better overall cleanliness, except for needing to wipe down the seats before use. Female washrooms have cleaner seats, but are oddly dirtier overall. The cleanest public washrooms are the Starbucks unisex washrooms.

(although since Sandy uses different washrooms on weekends vs weekdays, this might just be showing different usage patterns on weekends)

The gluten piece is good, but it would be better if it mentioned that people with celiac are sensitive to even tiny amounts of gluten.

Why do women have to use cubicals?

Would a row of seats above a trough be more space efficient?

Yes, me also. I expect the answer is going to be unpleasantly biological.

I find the whole conversation around gendered public toilets really interesting. There's all kinds of interesting stuff about different versions of fairness (time vs space), water usage and building efficiency all alongside all the gender and sex stuff.

The unburied parents story is very, very odd isn't it?

Yes, buried in the details of the story is the fact that the bodies of the parents appear to have been kept for quite a long time in a disused fish and chip shop before being discovered by the council.

It's all a bit creepy to be honest.
