I've read the first one and seen the films. They are Ok as light entertainment.
I feel I would have found them unsophisticated even as a kid, but I was reading mainstream adult SF/fantasy + history/computing/science etc. from about age 8/9.

They certainly are light entertainment.
But... the first one is obviously aimed at 11 year olds (Harry's age), the second at 12 year olds, the third at 13 year olds, and so on.
They get darker and more complex as they go aong.
Not to any huge degree (yet, anyway), but the first one is definitely the 'kiddiest'.
