One approach that might work would be for a printer manufacturer to control a model store catering specifically for their printers. Then the printer owners could both buy and sell models in the store.

Makerbot has the Thingieverse, but everything's free as far as I can see. But either way, whether free or sold models, there's a network effect going on there. The more printers sold means more model-makers and thus more models for the printer-buyers. But the model-makers should be offered a way to make something from their models.

Oh, and the laser approach has one advantage, in that you can make objects with free-floating internal bits. Balls within balls, working gears and so on.
