Nothing we've seen of River makes it look like she's sane.

Hmm... nothing about her when she's younger. When she's older though (the earlier appearances) her behaviour was more stable and responsible.

Do you mean when we see her in Silence in The Library?

She seemed pretty unstable there to me, presumably because she knew this was the last time she'd see him.

She seemed fairly rational there given that she was dealing with the possibility of the love of her life dying and the actuality of herself dying.

See, when people say "They were pretty sane considering the insane conditions they were under." it makes me nervous.

I'd like to see them under non-insane conditions before I make a judgement as to whether they are ever actually rational.

I think there's a pretty clear move from "barkingly insane and immoral" (Let's Kill Hitler) to "quirky and capricious but basically reasonable" (Pandorica Opens) to "dealing rationally with difficult situation" (Silence in the library).

Oh, she's definitely less crazy between Let's Kill Hitler and Pandorica Opens. I'm not convinced between that and Silence. I'll have to rewatch to be sure.
