In response to someone asking why some of River's choiced were questionable:

She's a _crazy_ time travelling archaeologist with a PhD.

She's been kidnapped, raised by terrifying aliens, brainwashed into being a psychotic assassin, escaped, died, grown up pretending to be best friends with her parents, died again, attempted murder, fallen in love for crazy reasons, tried to turn good, kidnapped again, forced into a suit that will kill the man she loves, and bumped into a parallel world, and then asked to effectively kill him again.

Nothing we've seen of River makes it look like she's sane. Brilliant, maybe. Sane? no.

I bet at some point they handwave something so that River can be extracted from the library into a new body... around the time Alex Kingston decides she doesn't want to play the role any more!
