in saying that, there's probably an awful lot more I like in these releases than not, and this will be a sorely tempting offer. I'm currently slightly weirded out that I don't have the trilogy

You could - back in 2006. But those editions weren't terribly high quality (having been taken from the laserdisc masters), the only high quality version out there is the special edition version with all the tweaks.
As I remember I kept trying to get them then and still only running across the New & Improved versions. *sigh* I'd get the tweaked one rather than have nothing but I keep not quite giving up hope that they'll release decent versions of the originals.
