In case you were wondering about the people behind the war with Iraq, here's an article about the neocons and their ideologies.

I have to say that I agree with at least some of their ideas. I think they might be being a tad idealistic though.

To me, the neocons sound remarkably like paranoid war-mongering imperialists, I disagree with them about as much as I disagree with the fundys.

What do you agree with them about?

That fundamentally anti-democratic groups whose core beliefs are against freedom of speech and action are a danger to democracies and to peace.

That introducing democracy and freedom are a necessary part of making the world safe for people outside of those groups.

That freedom of expression does not include the freedom to remove other people's right to expression.

What I disagree with is the idea that the removal by force of dictators is necessarily the right way to do so and won't cause more problems in the long run. I certainly think it's an option in certain cases (where the society is so controlled and insular that it's not possible to leverage democracy and freedom of information in other ways), but I don't think that it's the right option if there are other alternatives (for instance in Iran, which is slowly opening itself up to freedom, I think the the slower route is a lot safer).

I'm not quite as worried about the non-democratic portions of the world and believe that simply limiting interactions with such countries (ie ceasing the 3rd world political foolishness that the US loves to become involved in) would remove most or all of the threats. OTOH, I could be wrong. However, even admitting that, I do not believe democracy can be introduced by conquest and so the most likely result is even more repressive and hate-filled regimes (which is made especially likely given the sorts of 3rd world regimes that the US typically supports). Also, I consider their rhetoric to (in most cases) to be nothing more than lies masking a desire to "create democracy" by conquering much of the world.
