So, last night the joiner came round to quote for putting down flooring.

And told us that he could do the floor for a pretty reasonable price (£150).

But that while he _could_ just board over the old fireplace, we'd be better off gettign in someone who did this kind of thing regularly to do a proper job, so that we didn't have future problems with damp, etc.

Which shouldn't be expensive. I'm just very, very fed up with this dragging on and on and on.

That's super cheap for a floor, does that include materials too?!

Oh, Good Lord, no. The flooring was seperate (eight packs of this stuff, if you care). And underlay. And surrounds. About £400 in total for that, I think. So £600 for a room.

Thankfully, the insurers gave us £300 towards it (basically the cost if we'd just got a new carpet).

See above, but basically that was just the cost of laying it. The flooring itself was about £400 including underlay, I think.
