Final mark for the year

The first season of Community gets an A for Awesome. With special credit for the Paintball/action movie episode, and general plus points for John Hughes references sprinkled liberally throughout. And a gold star for employing Alison Brie (Pete's wife in Mad Men). Julie and I burned through the whole season over the last couple of weeks, and have enjoyed it a lot. Recommended.

What a coincidence! We just finished the first season last night after burning through it in a couple of weeks, too.

I was vaguely disappointed in the final episode of the season (though I presume, as is typical for the series, that some kind of mind-screw is in force) but I think it's one of the strongest first seasons of a US comedy since Arrested Development. It has some awesome writing and wonderful performances, and the characters don't go where you quite expect them to. Even Chevy Chase's Pierce has some depth to him, there is the occasional outbursts of wisdom and self-knowledge when you least expect them.

And the paintball episode is really something special, as was the Chicken Fingers/Goodfellas episode.
