(I tried the book, got about 50 pages in, and decided that there were going to be an awful lot of unpleasant people, connected in complicated ways, doing morally dubious things, and my brain wasn't going to be able to hold it all together well enough to actually enjoy it.)

I've read all the thus far released books and enjoyed them, but your assesment of the book is pretty accurate. Will probably work well well on t'telly though, although it might be a slow start.

i'm tempted to watch the TV series and then read the book
as someone with a visual prone memory i find this helps me follow complicated stories better.

I'm morally coded to like Sean Bean as a good guy. Sharpe did that to me, and I found it difficult to watch him as Boromir (even though he played it perfectly). Really enjoyed his role in Equilibrium (crap, I need to own that - just realised I don't!!!)

I really really hope that he's a good guy in game of Thrones - haven't read the books.

TV. HBO, I believe, so probably good TV.

Overall, I'd say he's the closest to "good guy" that the series gets. That's not really a major spoiler, and I think he's close to perfect casting for that role, some of the other choices look damn fine as well.

And Andrew's right, it's an HBO series, so they're trying to make it really good, and on past record there's a good chance they'll succeed.

That might almost be to his advantage in Boromir: if he's supposed to be a good guy corrupted through great misfortune, it's a lot more tragic, but if he seems a second-string creepy Aragorn from the start, there's less impact. *shrug*

FWIW, I absolutely loved the books. What I particularly liked is all the characters, even ones who seemed despicable to previous viewpoint characters, seemed to be sympathetic and likeable and have many good qualities when we see their point of view.

In retrospect, I may partly fall for the fallacy of confusing "interesting character" with "non-evil character". But OTOH, when I say "unpleasant character" I normally don't just mean a character who is not nice, but one who is unremittinglyly awful in almost every respect
