The trick in being wrong is to cover your back.

I remember a 1st-year undergrad astronomy practical where I ended up estimating the mass of the Sun at around 1030Kg +/- 1031Kg. There may have been a slight error in the error calculation :)

One of my A level maths teachers introduced us to the concept of Swayle's Constant.

It's a value you add to your answer which is automatically the amount it needs to be to make the answer correct.
