1983 wasn't so bad - Return of the Jedi, Scarface, Zelig, Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Trading Places, Videodrome, Educating Rita, Wargames, and Zelig.
2010 seems to have better kids movies (Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon were both amazing), but the general quality of movies doesn't seem to be any better.
Now, the quality of TV nowadays is definitely vastly better.
Kids movies are being more deliberately aimed at adults now, in my opinion. The flipside of this is that you could argue some movies for adults are being aimed more at kids than they used to be.
I was 12 in 1976-77. So I got: The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees and the whole punk thing. And Star Wars was fresh and new. Did I luck out in choosing when to be born, or what?
But then I'd say the same about the time when I was first picking up music/movies - when I had Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Depeche Mode, Metallica, Terminator 2, Delicatessen and JFK.
(That would be the first year I was at university, which is when I really discovered movies and music)

This isn't bad necessarily, just an observation.
