I seem to have unnerved myself

I received a package today containing Crossed - a collection of the 10 issue miniseries from Garth Ennis. It's a bit like 28 Days Later if the infected didn't just scream and charge at people, but instead became unutterably, psychotically, mindrendingly evil.

It thus allows Ennis to indulge his two favourite tropes - (1) really unpleasant violence and (2) the nature of friendship, particularly in the face of adversity.

And let me tell you, there's some serious fucking adversity in this story. It starts off unpleasant, goes downhill, and nobody gets a break the whole way through.

Is it actually any good? Well, it's not as good as Garth gets when he's at the top of his game. But, if you have a strong stomach, then it's worth a read. And if you actively like horror, then it's well worth picking up.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to find something nice and relaxing to lower my stress levels before I go to bed...

It surely can't be any grimmer than the Walking Dead?

I had to stop buying Walking Dead around the end of their stay in the prison, because that was just... too grim.

I do like the grim though... I'm quite intrigued. And I was really enjoying Walking Dead up until they did what they did.

I might give it a go anyway.

I figured it'd be the end of the series, but they've kept going, and gone well. That was just a darker part of their story.

Ah, so I might get drawn back in then.

Did you hear they're shooting a tv series based on it?

I imagine it will have to be at least 65% less grim. :)

I did, and I don't expect much.

(Hello, arrived here via a whole bunch of mutual friends)

Crossed was fantastic. Have you seen Crossed Family Values, the spin off that's being put out at the moment? Set in roughly the same timeframe amongst a very different group of people. Not to damn it with feint praise, but for a spin off being written by someone other than the original author and using such a prickly central conceit it manages to be a really strong comic.
