Curious

http://وزارة-الأتصالات.مصر

So, international DNS has gone live. Does everyone see this properly? And does it work for them?

Interestingly, I found it quite tricky to copy/paste as the text goes right to left, while the http goes left to right...

Works for me when I click it or drag it.

But Chrome and Firefox show the URL as garbled. Only Safari (on my system) shows the correct characters in the URL bar.

Yay!

the text is arabic, and the link works, but the link tooltip and the address bar when following the link are in ascii.

Doesn't work for me. I can see Arabic text in the link in your post, but when I click on the link, my browser (Linux Firefox) gives me an error saying "Address Not Found [...] www.وزارة-الأتصالات.مصر could not be found. Please check the name and try again".

I'm not sure why not; I know roughly how the mechanism is supposed to work, and as far as I can see it ought to be foolproof, but apparently not. I suppose it's possible that my company's name server is mucking about deliberately with international names in some way; if I remember, I'll try again at home.

eta: yes, Linux Firefox on my Debian machine at home works fine (though, as other people say, the URL bar shows the raw xn--gibberish names rather than the Arabic). Something odd at my office, then.

The URL works for me (IE8 32-bit), but the link doesn't thanks to LJ's "affiliate-stealing" add-on. (Or at least I think that's what's b0rking it.) When I cut-and-paste I can reach the page fine.

-- Steve did have a heckuva time cutting and pasting, as you note.

Of course it works! I'm using a Mac!

Works perfectly me for me. Fucking rock!

I've been wanting to learn Arabic for years actually, it's just so beautiful when written.

I can see it and it works for me however firefox shows the English version in the address bar. If I copy and paste it it does show as Arabic until it loads the page, then it turns into English. This laptop is a little weird as it has Arabic letters on the keyboard as well as English. That's what you get for buying things in the Middle East. (I didn't buy it, my Dad did. It was his until the accident.)

I got used to weird copying techniques thanks to all the time I've spent in Bahrain over the past couple of years.

Works onscreen and clicking from your LJ page shows the "raw" version not arabic in FF's URL bar. Didn't work clicking through from google reader though.

This is 'cos this IDN has not been "whitelisted" in my firefox settings (I have a vague memory of firefox implementing this to prevent scammers using fake IDNs which use unicode characters which "look" like others)

If you go to "about:config", add a boolean called "network.IDN.whitelist.xn--wgbh1c" set to true and restart firefox, it shows it in arabic in the URL bar.
