I never watch the Oscars, because half of the films are not shown in cinemas until months afterwards. It seems pointless trying to engage in a competition for films that you have not seen.
This year is no exception. Four of the the ten Best Picture films have yet to be shown in cinemas around here. The Hurt Locker is now being shown in some UK cinemas, but on a very limited release. The nearest place showing it is over 60 miles away (although I expect that will now change after it's triumph).
Oh, it's not been released yet? I assumed it had been released ages ago and I hadn't noticed :) OTOH, having read several people's comments on the oscars this year, it's the first time I've felt like I actually have known something about many of the films and been interested to know what happened, rather than not noticing at all.
I noticed it has been released into some cinemas this week, but I had no idea you could buy it on DVD already. I guess that kills off my chances of watching it on the big screen.

Only one of the shortlisted films - The Blind Side - hasn't been released in this country.

I doubt it since you can buy it on DVD for less than the price of a cinema ticket.
