Heating

Turned the boiler on this morning to get the flat heated up. It turned on for 10 seconds, and then turned itself off again.

And then I repeated this 5 times.

Then I phoned my boiler insurance people, who asked if I wanted someone out in two days, or three. I managed to bargain them down to tomorrow.

Thankfully, Julie then gave it one more go, and it started working.

In April there's a Boiler Scrappage scheme starting that will make it much cheaper for me to replace this aging beast. I'm really, really hoping that it sees me through until then...

Still not tempted by electricity? Not much to go wrong and much less messy to fix. You could ditch the insurance - always thought that was not cost effective unless, like you, you have a dodgy aging boiler likely to die at any second!

Also less energy conversion efficient thus more CO2 per unit of energy at the customer end. BTW if it's the pilot light that goes out then it's almost certainly the thermocouple - usually straightforward to replace if you know how.

ooh, sdo you have a link for the boiler scrappage scheme? Am v interested since my boiler is only marginally less doddery than yours and am expecting to replace rsn. (apols if you can jfgi - am on handheld ATM)

I looked into it briefly when it was announced and I believe you have to have a working G-rated boiler and plan to replace it with an A-rated boiler to have a hope of qualifying. Most of the info I saw seemed to imply it wouldn't be available until April 2010 and was expected to be heavily oversubscribed and not applicable in Scotland.

How much will I get for my old boiler?
Comes with free cat!

If a boiler is anything like an american water heater, it could be that the metal has rusted through and that water is leaking out onto the pilot flame and causing it to go out, in which case water could be leaking out to the ground as well. Hopefully that's not happening for you, but it'd be good to inspect the thing if you haven't already done so, to make sure.
