I think the essay at that last link does raise some interesting points. With music, we have seen a shift from buying physical recordings to downloading digital recordings to streaming digital recordings. If services such as Spotify and last.fm really are the way ahead then we will be in a world where we know who (or at least which IP address) has listened to what and how many times.

Two of our research streams at work are focusing on privacy and data protection in the Cloud and ownership of provider-generated data in the Cloud. This is an interesting intersection of the two; as we shift towards a delivery model where content is pulled from the Cloud on-demand, we open ourselves up to enormous potential surveillance of our reading and listening habits.
