I have a facebook account because I need one to be able to see photos posted by family overseas. I make a *point* of not reading it, ever, apart from that, because the interface is offensively terrible and the main functionality seems entirely based around people spamming me with ads for games and events I don't want to go to.
So I kind of break the assumptions in the middle two questions.
I recommend http://lite.facebook.com - which doesn't include any other applications other than status updates, photos and events, and is much cleaner than the main site.
I find the usual Facebook very useful. It's basically an equivalent of Outlook or Notes but for personal life, plus the photo tagging and sharing is madly useful. Blocking works well to make game invites go away.
I don't trust myself to actually get the work done I need to if I look at either facebook or lj at work - so I treat them a strictly leisure activities.
I thought the move from LJ to Facebook might have been partially because FB is easier to update from a phone interface than LJ is. This turned out to be untrue.
