Children with a lower self-esteem, those who felt less in control of their lives, and those who worried often were more likely to gain weight over the next 20 years, the results showed.

There's a lot missing from that second link-- like how large the weight difference is, and what proportion of the kids with low self-esteem were already worried about their weight. The latter might indicate more of a genetic inclination to get fat, and/or earlier dieting, which carries a risk of putting on more weight.

Which would seem to indicate that A leads to B - although they could both be caused by the same thing.
