The dementia risk is apparently even higher from grief than from being alone.

In re "People are not rational", which might as well be labeled "People are not convenient":Open Minds says that people have sensory input and processing channels which access the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious minds. I haven't figured out how to work with it, but it's one of the rare self-help books where a high proportion of the review are from people who got good results from it.

I'm pretty sure the idea that there are sensory modes which cause automatic space-out (sometimes with unconscious processing) is sound, and heaven help you if you insist in communicating in a way which doesn't work for the person you're expecting to listen.
