  • At Linköpings University Hospital in Sweden, radiologist Anders Persson dissects cadavers without lifting a scalpel. Using magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography, he captures thousands of images of a body, from head to toe. A computer then assembles the pieces into a stunning 3-D postmortem portrait in which structures are differentiated by hue and opacity: Bones appear white and opaque; organs, a translucent red. Virtual autopsies reveal evidence that ordinary examinations often miss, like gas trapped inside wounds, which can show the path of a bullet or knife blade. Swedish police have used the images in more than 300 murder cases. Bonus: They're easier for jurors to understand (and stomach).
  • This is looking worse and worse as it goes along. I might wait to see what my friends say before deciding whether to watch it...

  • Men are still twice as likely to climax as women during casual sex. But the good news is that it's not because they don't know what they are doing. They don't pull their weight because, according to one guy interviewed by The Daily Beast, 'no one makes them', and basically, during casual sex they just don't care. The article goes on to cite new academic research explaining that within relationships, women orgasm about 80% as often as men. But in casual hookups, the number drops to half as often--and only a third as often in first-time encounters.

I'd be interested to know how they operationalised "the male orgasm" or "male climax"... (I'm willing to bet most people think this a stupid question heh)

What are the options?

[identity profile] endless-psych.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect male orgasm/climax is operationalised as ejaculation. I'd contend (mainly from my own anecdata) that ejaculation /= climax an that there is probably a fairly big psychological component involved.

The drumming thing does sound like a pile of woo-tastic bollocks.

Halal slaughter isn't the nicest way to kill animals, not that I care to be honest just figured someone disinterested in such things should raise that.

The Red Dwarf is going to be shite. :(

I really, really hope that Red Dwarf photo is a joke and the behind-the-scenes-guy is telling them "get the hell off the Coronation Street set, the Red Dwarf one is Studio 3!"

If not, I may have unfortunate flashbacks to 26/27 November 1993, and that would be most unpleasant.

> Halal pizza place

Agh, what stupid objections! I mean, there are LOTS of shops that don't sell you pork. Are you oppressed because a stationer's won't sell you pork? Because a grocer's won't? People sort of expect Halal food to be magic-special-not-for-outsiders rather than simply a subset of normal food. I mean, "people want to buy X. shop opens to sell X" is one of the oldest stories, it's not supposed to be controversial. Go multicultural britain!

Not a direct challenge to what you are saying but reading the article it sounds as though the franchisee of this Domino's wasn't happy handling dead pig on account of his religious beliefs, but didn't care to open an independent Halal pizza place of his own for some reason.

I kind of feel that this goes against the one-size fits all nature of chain type places, that you can go to this or that one and generally rely upon their having the same choice of product.

Maybe given the population of the area certain products - i.e. dead pig pizza - will sell worse than elsewhere, and others better, but I would be interested in seeing what happens subsequently, whether the loss of business from one group is offset by the increase in business from another or what.

Whatever the case, it's a nice little practical experiment in market choice in action.

Those computers that are dissecting bodies... I hope they're not the same ones that have screwed up the admissions process...
