Thats really sad :( He can possibly stand up next to Tolkien as one of the major influences in how fantasy is perceived...
That said, a fond irreverence seems really quite appropriate. I'd suggest immortalisation as the Gygax monster in the latest incarnation of his creation as a highly appropriate tribute.
