Not so much in my experience - I've been introduced to a bunch of people and had nothing to say, and then having discovered that I know them (even tangentially) it's broken the ice enough to have a relaxing conversation.

i've had the thought of getting a simple t-shirt made up with my lj name on it before for such occasions/situations, but then again i already have such a hard time what with having both a name that is hard to forget, coupled with an absolutely terrible memory for putting names to faces.

This has never happened to me, and standing at the bar at Infest, you can't just hear a succession of myspace/livejournal/other site usernames being traded.

Also, I've recognised people from their LJ icons before.
