They were really popular in Japan, and had a hard-core fan-base in the US. I liked them because movies came out for general release on LD the same time they came out on rental release for VHS. Paying $35 for The Crow is a whole lot better than $195 for a videotape that wears out, or waiting a year or more for it to hit general release on VHS. Well, back then, anyways.
