Fascist America

And no, I'm not being hyperbolic.

Time Magazine is reporting that the Bush Administration is removing U.S. delegates from the Inter-American Telephone Commission because they gave money to John Kerry in last year's election. A Bush spokesman admits it's true: 'We wanted people who would represent the Administration positively, and--call us nutty--it seemed like those who wanted to kick this Administration out of town last November would have some difficulty doing that,' says White House spokesman Trent Duffy. Employees of Qualcomm and Nokia are among those who have been removed from the commission.

Can I bring all the other sane people in my group of US friends? Surely at least one of them knows how to twist a bedroom into non-euclidean physics so we can house 200-some in your flat.

I seem to be living in an era not unlike that of 1930's Germany. It's actually very scary.

Last week, while at a friends bbq, I was talking loudly about how comparitavely little freedom of speech i felt I had here and how powerful the feeling of paranoia generated by the US media is. Some guy started shining a torch in my face from across the yard. It was my friend's nosey neighbour who'd recently joined the neighbourhood guard movement. My friend's mum joined the same group (neighbourhood watch with guns) and a government agent gave a speech on how they should keep their ears open for talk of terrorist activity or anti american meetings.

Fucked up place this is and I'm in the heart of liberal america - lord knows what the south is like.
