überwältigt

Just back from Der Untergang (Downfall) - a german made film about the final days of WWII, set in and around Hitler's Bunker.  It mixes explosively impressive action sequences with the unpleasant claustrophobia of a group of people stuck in an ever-tightening noose, made worse because not all of them realise how bad things are.  The higher-ups are split between realists who can see what is coming, idealists who believe they can be saved and a few who are clearly insane (Hitler varying back and forth between all three of these groups - I've heard that he was being treated with amphetamines, and he certainly comes across that way).

Highly, highly recommended.  I was deeply touched and [livejournal.com profile] poisonduk cried.

might go see it this weekend methinks.

From stuff I've read, Hitler was very "medicated" by the end, though not as much as Churchill, who was very full of drugs and alchohol, and got something like minutes of sleep each night for large chunks of the war.

I saw it when it opened here in Germany, and was really impressed. Especially so because afterwards, the entire packed movie theater just sat there, stunned. Eventually, people started getting up and making their way out of the theater without a single word. I've never seen a reaction like that at a movie theater, especially not a big, commercial one like the one where I saw that movie.
