I lived with Barbara Strachey for a while. She was utterly fascinating. She showed me her photograph albums with a casual mention of “there’s Bertrand” or “there’s Virginia”.

I’ve still got the chest of drawers she gave me, which has matchless sentimental value, and Virginia and Phil have got the console table.
