In response to a comment about meeting me for the first time, BrandNewGun said

I thought you might be scary, and you're not at all.

Now, I understand that I have somewht scary hair and I can be a tad argumentative online, but I've discovered that this is a frequent event in my life - people expect me to be scary if they've seen me at a distance/read my journal before meeting me.

Can someone please explain why?

You sound very intellectual. That can be intimidating.

I think what I meant was that you're very direct and you don't fear contradicting people in your online persona - and I wasn't sure how that would translate in face-to-face conversation. Direct can be very good or rather bad.

You don't seem scary at all to me. Highly intelligent and very argumentative aren't scary. Scary is clown suit plus machete.

I knew you first in real life, so I don't think you are scary at all (you had less hair though, as I recall).

Now, people found me scary and I never knew why either.

I've never met you, but I don't think you're scary. But then, I'm not easily intimidated...
